SELF-STUDY

We are endlessly fascinated with the drawn and painted face. I can vividly remember when I was about six years old, asking my father, who was not an artist, to draw me a face. I was so in awe of his pencil drawing, which was pretty basic looking back now, but to my eyes it was so magical that he could do that! He seemed to be summoning up someone, and that was so exciting to me. We tend to be intimidated when it comes to drawing the face more then other subjects, but we are missing out so much if we don’t include it in our art practices that I really encourage you to give it a go! I get a similar buzz to my childhood experience when I draw and paint the face, as marks, and lines, and lots of happy accidents,  finally come together into a human presence. It’s time so well spent to learn how to create expressive faces. Let me tell you more about how we will approach portraits in the course outline:

Course Outline

Week 1-  Heads up

This week we will look at the head which is the container of our facial features, and
how the sculptural form of the head has to be considered to create expressive faces. We will explore how shadow and light patterns can really help to give form to the head and how this information can be used to create abstracted portraits that hint at the features, and are full of mystery.

Week 2 –   The Features

This week we will look at how eyes nose and mouth are connected within the head, and how to inject more emotion into the features by stealing knowledge from the masters!

Week 3 –  Color and texture

This week we will learn how less is more when we reach for the colors we use to depict the face, and how texture can really add character to our expressive portraits

Week 4 – Face drama

This week we will look at how exaggerated scale and angles can add drama to our face drawings and paintings.
